Andy was born August 15, 1972 in Portland, Oregon. He was raised in Fairview and Beaverton and graduated from Aloha High School in 1991. He was very active in the performing arts during his time at Aloha. He played tuba in the marching band, saxophone in the concert band, trombone in the jazz band, and was also proficient with trumpet, keyboard and drums. He served two years as drum major for the marching band, which won many competitions under his leadership including Portland’s Rose Festival Parade. Andy also won “Best Drum Major” in countless events. He continued to make music with his friends throughout his life, but it was at Aloha that Andy developed his passion for theater, acting in and directing several plays.
After graduation, Andy appeared in many dramatic plays in Portland and co-founded the hilarious college sketch troupe, “Like We’re Serious.” In 1996, with good friends, Loren Hoskins, Brandon Campbell, Ted Douglass, and others, Andy co-founded The 3rd Floor comedy troupe, which has gone on to become Portland’s longest-running sketch comedy troupe, staging 44 theatrical runs in Portland and receiving outstanding reviews at major sketch comedy festivals in Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and Chicago. It was in The 3rd Floor that Andy found his second family, a tight-knit group of comedians, actors and theatrical artists of all stripes. Andy was also a member of the sketch group/punk band, Shiv!, as well as the Gunhappy Theatrical Ensemble. Beginning in 2003, he co-produced the nationally renowned Best Of The Best Sketch Fest for 6 years, which brought exceptional sketch comedy performers to Portland from all over the country. Andy was also a sought-after sound designer and did audio and voice work for stage and screen. Andy was a long-time employee at FedEx Office, where he worked until his death.
Andy was a dedicated father to his daughter, Ava. In her, he found stability and learned the true meaning of “love.” He had a remarkable gift of humor and friendship and is beloved by nearly everyone he met during his entire all-too-short life. He had a way of taking people at face value and seeing the best in everyone. His infectious laugh and penchant for silliness will be missed terribly.
Andy is survived by his daughter Ava; parents, Ginny Horton of Troutdale, OR and Dave Horton of Cary, NC; brothers Chris of Phoenix, AZ, Robb of Boone, NC, Jeremy Cohen of Knoxville, TN, and Jerod Cohen of Apex, NC. Andy’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to Jason Coffey for his close friendship with Andy and for his extraordinary assistance during Andy’s last days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a trust fund for Andy’s daughter, Ava. Follow this link to donate: www.youcaring.com/ava-buzan-453223
